The Best Time to Visit Morocco

A Moroccan landscape at golden hour

Morocco is a year-round destination, but the ideal month depends on where you want to go — the imperial cities, the High Atlas, the Atlantic coast or the Sahara each have their own best season.

Spring (March to May)

For most travellers this is the sweet spot. The cities are warm but comfortable, the countryside is green and dotted with wildflowers, and the desert is pleasant before the summer heat arrives. It is also an excellent window for walking in the Atlas foothills.

Autumn (September to November)

The second ideal season. The fierce summer heat fades, the Sahara cools to comfortable daytime temperatures, and clear skies make for superb mountain views. Cities like Fes and Marrakech are at their most enjoyable.

Summer (June to August)

Inland can be very hot — Marrakech and the desert regularly climb above 40°C. This is the time to head for the Atlantic coast, where Essaouira stays breezy, or up into the High Atlas, where the air is cool and the trekking is at its best.

Winter (December to February)

Crisp, sunny days in the cities and mild afternoons in the desert, though nights turn cold. Snow blankets the High Atlas, and an ascent of Mount Toubkal becomes a proper winter mountaineering objective rather than a walk.

In short

Spring and autumn suit almost every itinerary. Come in summer for the coast and the mountains, and in winter for clear light, quiet medinas and snow-capped peaks.
